| History
of Nia |
Nia was born out of the aerobics craze of the
80’s In the USA in 1983, Debbie and Carlos Rosas took off
their shoes and eliminated the repetitive jogging up and down that
embodied traditional aerobic exercise, and created barefoot “fusion
fitness”. After receiving support from the medical community
for the cardiovascular benefits derived from the Nia Technique,
the product was launched nationally in 1987 and teacher training
began. Training encompasses five levels: white belt, blue belt,
brown belt and first-degree black belt. Nia can be taught by anyone
with white belt training. In 1995, Nia was offered to people with
special needs, such as autistic people and prisoners. It is now
used successfully with cancer patients, mental patients as well
as in schools, colleges, universities, and rehabilitation centres.
Nia is offered in unique settings, and is a model for integrating
fitness, healing and personal growth into community services and
businesses. |

In 2002, the Nia technique was brought to South Africa by black
belt trainer, Kathy Wolstenholme from Boulder, Colorado, where she
operated one of the first Nia studios. She also worked with high-risk
girls with sexual and drug abuse backgrounds, using Nia as an alternative
and effective means of therapy. Her vision is to share this incredible
movement practice throughout South Africa, developing the program
nationally through white belt training.
